Converting customers on your e-Commerce store is not only about great prices and irresistible products. It's also about flawless presentation. Here are 6 unavoidable keys to designing perfect product sliders for your webshop.
The front page, the category pages, the product pages, the power step and we can keep going much longer than you want to keep reading...
No matter where you look on your e-Commerce store, you'll most likely find sliders with product recommendations.
There's just no way of getting around it - when customers convert on your online store, they have most likely found their products in a slider somewhere.
And that makes it essential for you to take your sweet time designing these sliders just right, so you can convert as many visitors into customers as possible.
And in doing this, there are 6 boxes you need to be able to tick:
1. Attract attention with your headlines
Spend a good deal of time and energy tweaking your slider headlines until you believe they truly engage with your customers and catch their attention.
The devil is in the detail here, but this finicky approach can really pay off.
For example, consider which of the following headlines, you would be most interested in as a customer:
"We recommend" or "Our recommendations for you".
Tip: Using the personal pronoun "you" is not a bad rule of thumb to get you started writing engaging headlines for your sliders.
2. Harmonize your slider and webshop designs
No matter whether you use the built-in slider designs of your e-Commerce platform or external software, you need to make sure that the design of your sliders aligns with your webshop design in general.
Yes, your sliders should stand out, but not at the expense of your overall webshop design - remember that appearance matters greatly when you want to position yourself as a professional and reliable e-Commerce store.
Tip: Use the same fonts and button colours in your slider design as you use on the rest of the website. This is an easy way to create a consistent design.
3. Avoid cluttering your sliders
It can be tempting to cram as many products into each slider as possible.
But displaying more products doesn't automatically result in more sales - it may just cause unnecessary confusion for your customers.
In fact, it's often optimal to place no more than 4 products in each slider and in some cases it's even more suitable with only 3 products per slider.
Tip: Make sure you have enough products in each slider wheel to enable your customers to click the slider button 3 times.
4. Make your images sexy
Have you ever run across restaurants that have faded, greenish pictures of their food out front?
...And have you ever wanted to eat there? Me neither.
Presentation is just everything, so make sure your product images do your products justice.
- Remove the background on your images.
- Don't (don't!) insert pixellated images into your sliders.
Tip: Large images breed slow webshops: make sure you don't use images that are unnecessarily large (consider creating a designated folder for thumbnails).
5. 3 sliders (usually) does the trick
3 sliders is usually all you need to catch the attention of your customers.
- One slider based on the click-history of your individual customers
- One slider with popular products
- One slider with trending products
Tip: Are discounts a big part of your sales strategy, then it will make good sense to also add a fourth slider with "Best offers".
6. Emphasize discounts
Customers love discounts.
So if you have a special price on products in your sliders, then make sure to let your customers know how much they stand to save.
Tip: An extra touch is to add a small discount banner by the product images to clearly illustrate the price reduction.
Those were your 6 keys to designing product sliders that engage with your visitors and send them towards conversion.
